“Foreign Students Enjoy Calligraphy Lessons in Taiwan”

Foreign students are opening their eyes to Chinese culture by taking advantage of free calligraphy classes at Zhengda University.

Students are participating in a 5 week calligraphy course designed to give them the rudimentary basics of calligraphy technique and inspire a love for the traditional art. It is hoped that the course will give the students the skills needed to continue with the practice of calligraphy once the taught course concludes.

Classes are held for one hour a week in the International Building and are available free for students of Chinese language at the CLC in Zhengda University. The materials are all provided and the students can even use the resources for further private practice as they wish. These total beginners are trained in the vital details of the art of calligraphy, down to details such as correct grip, use of ink, and body posture. Adapting to use of a brush instead of a pen takes time and effort to master , so the first classes are dedicated to brush control before the students can move on to more complex character writing. Today the students practised drawing tadpoles and water droplets.

Ten students from all over the world are taking part in the course, each aiming to get something different out of the course. ‘When I was younger I took maybe one or two classes in calligraphy and always wanted to learn more. Here in Taiwan it is a fantastic opportunity to learn,’ says South Korean student Tingwo. Her classmates come from as far as Russia and Britain and are all equally eager to learn this Chinese art. The small class size means that the qualified and experienced calligraphy teacher is able to offer individual attention to all the students in turn to help them produce the best and most attractive results possible.

However according to teacher Xie Wen Yu, there is much more to calligraphy than just writing attractive characters: ‘calligraphy is like t’ai chi. One learns to concentrate one’s ‘qi’, the body’s spiritual energy. Calligraphy involves the entire body. It takes a lot of time and effort to study but it is worth it as you can learn to empty your mind and attain a level of total calm.’

Chinese calligraphy has over 2500 years of history. Characters used today are still practically unchanged from 1000 years ago. Characters were developed through gradually through time and are believed to contain a lot of information not immediately obvious to those not familiar with characters. Chinese characters reflect historic Chinese culture. Xie Wen Yu starts every first class by stating ‘Calligraphy IS China’. She explains: ‘If you really want to understand China, then you must study calligraphy. How could you truly understand China without understanding the culture that is contained in every character? The study of calligraphy provides the students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of this magnificent ancient culture.’

毛筆在中國已經超過2500年歷史,現代的繁體漢字幾乎跟一千年前用的漢字一模一樣;

外國學生需要比較多的幫助;
